Modena Cathedral - archivolt on South front
Is it some kind of hermaphrodite like this other figure from the cathedral ?
Or is it a bicephalic Janus figure representing January,
the old man toiling away on the right being December ?
It might represent the happy heavenly union of the physical with the spiritual
being or 'body',
compared with the labour of the physical body in the fields.
